Job Description

Scope of Work:

  • Plans and develops “hands-on, minds-on” environmental educational programs for elementary and middle school students.
  • Development and implementation of after-school environmental education programs that take place at schools in southern Rhode Island, Monday through Thursday in late afternoons. Provide content and structure of 6-week enrichment programs that run approximately 60 minutes. Responsible for planning, leading, and implementing experiences for elementary and middle school children in a small group setting at the schools.
  • Supervise as many as 15 students.

Background Needed:

  • Possesses knowledge of natural science subjects
  • Experience in environmental education
  • Experience in teaching children (background check required)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create programs so that the structure and activities of 6-week programs are arranged in advance and nature-based topics are implemented. As part of the program, guided play is encouraged through active exploration, discovery, and curiosity.
  • Plan activities that give children the opportunity to participate in activities that are recreational, educational and nature-based.
  • Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering techniques and completing projects in a fun and engaging way.
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in activities.
  • Enrichment activities consist of science, nature studies, and environmental education, along with creative arts, and arts and crafts in classroom space and/or outdoors in schoolyard.
  • Develop age appropriate activities that keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork and positive engagement.
  • Works with Nature Center director, program assistant and other environmental educators, maintaining good communication.
  • Communicates with on-site school staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Monitor the health and safety of all program participants.
  • Model positive program participation and appropriate interaction with children.
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.

Compensation: $15/hour for program development; $20/hour for program implementation, including additional time before and after each program for set-up & clean up. No additional benefits or travel reimbursement are offered at this time. Please note that the number of hours per week varies.
