Volunteer Internships, The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy RI Chapter has two volunteer internships available. Positions are part-time or full-time, run April through August, and are based out of Goosewing Beach Preserve in Little Compton, RI.

Shorebird Monitor Intern (Volunteer)

Location: Goosewing Beach Preserve, Little Compton RI; and other nearby sites
Start Date: April through August (dates flexible) part-time or full-time
Description: The Shorebird Monitor Intern will assist The Nature Conservancy staff in monitoring and protection of shorebirds (piping plovers and least terns) at sites in Little Compton, Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. The volunteer intern will play an important role in the recovery of a federally threatened species.  He/she will have the opportunity to work closely with conservation professionals and learn about the ecology, conservation values and threats of a fragile beach, dune, and coastal pond ecosystem.
Duties:
• Patrol Goosewing Beach Preserve and communicate with beachgoers about endangered species conservation, monitor fenced shorebird nesting areas, and help educate the public on the “no dogs” policy.
• Complete data forms on visitor use and interactions. Record numbers and location of breeding pairs of Piping Plover and Least Tern, their nests, eggs, hatchlings and fledglings; note the timing of all events. Help document nest and chick losses.
• Assist with installation or removal of fencing to protect nesting territories and nests, modify
fencing periodically as beach situations change, and help maintain the condition of fencing.
• Assist Conservancy staff with nature programs, events and beach walks.
Training: Conservancy staff will provide training on endangered species management, plover /tern natural history, data collection, and beach visitor education.
Transportation:  Intern must provide his/her own transportation.

Goosewing Education Intern (Volunteer)

Location: Goosewing Beach Preserve, Little Compton RI
Start Date: May through August, part-time or full-time
Description: The Goosewing Education Intern will work closely with the Education Coordinator and other Conservancy staff to support The Nature Conservancy’s shorebird protection and education program. The volunteer intern will assist the Education Coordinator in promoting educational opportunities and increasing public awareness of the Conservancy’s management of shorebird nesting sites at Goosewing Beach.
Duties:
• Assist Conservancy field staff in leading nature walks and programs for the general public, community group, school groups, and donors to educate about barrier beach ecology, local natural history, shorebird biology, management and protection efforts.
• Assist within the Benjamin Family Environmental Center by greeting the public, interpreting exhibits, and answering questions.  Initiate positive, engaging communications with beach visitors. Provide information about Goosewing Beach and the shorebird protection program.
• Assist in developing interpretive displays, brochures and educational materials.
Training: Conservancy staff will provide training on endangered species management, plover and tern natural history, data collection, and beach visitor education.
Transportation: Intern must provide his/her own transportation.
