Based on Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay, NBNERR is one of 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves located around the country. This network of protected areas was established to provide long-term protection of coastal lands so they can serve as platforms for research, education, training, and stewardship. The Reserve is supported and administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM). NBNERR’s mission is to preserve, protect and restore coastal and estuarine ecosystems of Narragansett Bay through long-term research, education, and training.
