Policy Priorities
Through grassroots and direct advocacy, the Rhode Island Environmental Education Association promotes public policies and initiatives that support environmental education.
As a core part of our mission, RIEEA supports community-led advocacy efforts and drives environmental education policy on the local, state, and federal levels. Often, we are the only voice of the environmental education community testifying on proposed legislation and participating in state policy discussions.
Our four priority areas are:
- Environmental Education – Providing indoor and outdoor education experiences and workforce development opportunities for all Rhode Islanders
- Access to Outdoor Spaces – Making environmental amenities (such as parks, green spaces, shorelines, etc) equally accessible to all Rhode Islanders
- Community Awareness – Improving public awareness of the individual and community benefits of a healthy and sustainable environment
- Environmental Justice – Supporting environmental justice, “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies” (EPA 2023), especially in historically excluded and/or marginalized communities
