Kaytee Canfield (she/they) is RIEEA’s new Communications Manager. They are passionate about exciting people about how science exists in our everyday environment and activities. Growing up on the California central coast, she’s spent her entire life exploring the outdoors recreationally and academically. Recreationally, she loves to hike with her partner and dog, stop and admire all the wildflowers, swim, bike, run, and snowboard. They are working on slowly developing her skateboarding skills, too. As a west coast transplant, the fall colors have convinced her New England is the place to put down roots.
Academically, they have a B.S. and M.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Southern California, and a Ph.D. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island. Her training and experience have focused on human interactions with coastal environments, especially as related to justice, resilience, and communication. Outside of RIEEA, she works currently as a postdoctoral researcher at the Environmental Protection Agency, in the Office of Research Development on the science of engagement on water-related environmental challenges.
As a queer person, intersectional inclusion in the outdoors is an essential part of their identity, which she pursues by working on the New England-based group Queer Hikes with their partner. Kaytee is excited to be joining the RIEEA community and to be building more relationships with environmentally minded folx in the Ocean State!
